How to create an editorial calendar

How to Create an Editorial Calendar

How to create an editorial calendar

Te Amo Charlie’s 2014 Editorial Calendar was created using Microsoft Excel

In a world that is speeding by, time is precious. If you’re working hard to maintain an online presence, it is really important to maintain a schedule.

When I first started blogging for others, I relied heavily on trends, current events and their editorial calendar.

An editorial calendar is a list of planned themes, features and topics that will be discussed, and executed. Editorial calendars are meant to keep bloggers, writers and magazines on a publishing schedule. All major magazines have editorial calendars. Martha Stewart has an editorial calendar.

It’s simple to make an editorial calendar. The first one I ever created for Te Amo Charlie Designs was through Microsoft Excel. It isn’t pretty, but it serves its purpose.

Keep in mind that your editorial calendar isn’t set in stone.  Don’t be afraid to make changes to your editorial calendar. You can include as many details or as little as you prefer. The goal is to have something to guide your planning and writing.

How to Create an Editorial Calendar

There are a ton of tidbits I can offer. When creating a calendar, or trying to get on a schedule, stick to your style. Don’t create an editorial calendar that looks too busy. Stick to the format you are most comfortable with.

  1. Determine how frequently you will write or post. If you’re not a frequent writer or blogger, this will be the hardest step for you. Be realistic about how often you will write or post.
  2. Determine how far out in advance you would like to plan. Whether it’s six months or a year, scribble down a general plan or list of topics and trends.
  3. Determine how much information you plan on sharing.
  4. Don’t use the internet, use your noggin. Jot as many ideas as you can think up. Whether silly or not, sometimes the best ideas evolve out of doodling.
  5. Be consistent. Some readers will only be interested in DIY projects and others will want business tips. Be sure to add regular, reoccurring features for these readers.
  6. Organize posts into themes or monthly series.
  7. Consider seasonal changes and holidays (i.e. New Year’s Resolutions, 100th Day of School, Spring Cleaning, Graduation, Superbowl, Summer Vacation, Back to School, etc).
  8. Use a calendar. There are a ton of calendar and scheduling apps floating out there. Make sure to use a a system that works best for you.

What are your New Year’s Resolutions?

Happy New Year Printables 2014

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

For those of you who were able to enjoy the midnight festivities, and are up early as well, I applaud you! You are starting your New Year off right.

Today I want to share some of my personal, and business, resolutions in order to help those of you who have yet to make a list of resolutions.

Sometimes making a list is tough. I can think of at least 20 things I would like to change about myself. But I didn’t list all 20. It’s really important when you are creating a list of resolutions to think about what makes you happy?

Again, as you rattle off a long laundry list, get specific. If losing 15 lbs before summer will make you happy, write that down…and write down more. For example, I want to lose weight. Although I can picture the end result..me standing in a hot two-piece feeling proud and strong….I need to get specific with my resolution. How am I going to lose 15 pounds? Will I join a gym or commit to my own strict regimen? Do I want to be bikini ready for the summer months? Being specific will help you to visualize the steps involved in your goal.

This is one of my resolutions for 2014.

  • Lose 15 lbs by July 3 (NO GYM)
Happy New Year Party

Happy New Year Party

Sometimes adding a goal date can keep you motivated, so that you reach your goal. The downside is that you may feel a little pressured if you don’t meet your goal date.Don’t allow the pressure to push you off the bandwagon. Once you fall, there is a 50-50 chance that you will stay off, and ultimately not reach your goal in the year.

I encourage everyone to set a small list of resolutions. Create a list that is going to inspire your future, and those around you. Do things you love, do things you have never done before. Whatever you do, do what makes you happy.

Happy New Year, everyone!

A Special Thanks and New Year’s Wishes

Happy New Year Printables 2014

Happy New Year!

As the New Year approaches, I just want to take the opportunity to say THANK YOU.

Thank you to everyone who has supported every wild idea. After I graduated from college, I had so many visions for my life, but seemed to neglect what I loved the most: to create. From pallet creations to pressed wedding invitations, those of you who have supported me have seen it all! Thank you for all the likes and comments on social media. You all rock!

A special thanks to my clients and buyers. Some of you have turned into life long friends, and I couldn’t imagine a day without all the laughs, growls and wine…never a day without wine.

Keep in touch after the New Year, things are going to get really fun. For those of you knew, I encourage you to share my page and some of the work I do in the community with your friends, colleagues and family.

The future of Te Amo Charlie has a ton in store for the new year. I’m so happy that you all will be a part of it!
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
